Things to know before you go

 

 

The city of Chania is served by the Chania International Airport (CHQ) in the nearby Akrotiri peninsula. There are direct scheduled and charter flights connecting Chania with several European cities, especially during the holiday season.

 

Domestic flights from the Athens International Airport are also frequent and are carried out by Olympic Airlines and Aegean Airlines.

 

If you visit Athens first, you can travel to Chania by ferry. Greek ferries are generally very modern and comfortable, and they connect Athens (Piraeus port) to Chania (Souda port) on a daily basis. The sea trip takes about 8,5 hours.

The shipping company that serves Chania is ANEK Lines.

A regular bus service (buses leave every 20min) connects the Souda port to Chania city. Taxis from Souda port to Chania city centre cost approximately 5 €.

 

When in Athens, keep in mind that there is a direct bus service connecting Athens airport with Piraeus port. The Piraeus port may also be reached by the Athens’ Attiko Metro (change at "Monastiraki" station for Line 1 to Piraeus) or the Suburban Railway (change at "Neratziotissa" station for Line 1 to Piraeus). The terminal station of Line 1 of the Athens metro is Piraeus, and the metro station is just next to Piraeus port.
